Be動詞4つの用法

A=Bの形式で定義する

Be動詞の使われ方の代表的なものはA=Bという意味です。

isの前後を繋ぎます。

  1. HTML is a markup language.
  2. The latest version is HTML5.
  3. The role of a web browser is to read HTML documents and display them.(ウェブブラウザの役割はHTML文書を読み、それを表示することです。)

1.では「HTML= マークアップ言語の一種」という構造になっています。

3.「ウェブブラウザの役割 = HTML文書を処理すること」で、簡単にすると

形容詞を繋ぐ

  1. This website is beautiful.
  2. Was this helpful?(このページは役立ちましたか?)
  3. This cat video is so cute.
  4. I'm so hungry and tired now.
  5. I was busy yesterday.

ある場所にある、いる

  1. The search box is at the left sidebar.(検索ボックスは左サイドバーにあります。)
  2. The instruction is in the attachment.(指示は添付ファイルに入っています)
  3. I'll be right back.(離席しますが、すぐに戻ります)
  4. I'm just back from a lunch break.(ちょうどお昼休憩から戻ったところです。)
  5. I'll be with you in a minute.(すぐにそちらへ着きます)

比較:There is/ there are

「ある」「いる」という表現には他にもあり、特に所有者などを明示しない場合はthere isやthere areの文章が使われます。

  1. There's no difference between this and that.
  2. Is there a bathroom here?
  3. There're two options for improving the performance.
  4. There's something wrong with Google Analytics now.(グーグルアナリティクスの調子がおかしい)

to be locatedで「ある」をはっきり示す

ファイルなどが「ある」と言う場合に、be動詞だけよりはっきりと表現する場合に使えます。

at the directory where the file is located(ファイルがある(保存されている)フォルダ=ディレクトリ)

「存在する」のexist

他にもexistでも存在を表すことができる。

  1. The request page does not exist.(ご要望のページは存在しません)
  2. I thought some related webpages existed.(何か関連するページがあると思っていた)

進行形や受身形などに使われる

  1. This video has been deleted.
  2. I'm testing with updated codes at the moment.
  3. Today, I'm going to talk about good designs. 

実践編

PHP is a popular general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited to web development.

この文は長いですが、根幹となる構造は

PHP is a scripting language.

と箇所で、補足情報がたくさんくっついています。

後半のthat以下の情報を加えると、特にウェブ開発に適したスクリプト言語と書かれています。これはスクリプト言語というものはどれもウェブ開発に適しているものだという意味ではなく、PHPという言語の特徴だというニュアンスです。

この例も根幹は

に補足情報として、その後のused以下に「マークアップ言語で書かれた文書の見た目や配置を記述するために使われる」という箇所が付随しています。
